Stroke Care
The two kinds of strokes are caused by opposite issues: an ischemic stroke is due to a lack of blood flow and a hemorrhagic stroke is due to bleeding. There are the "FAST" standard stroke signs or symptoms, and if you or someone you're with is displaying them, call 911:
- Face is numb or drooping
- Arm is numb or weakened
- Speech is slurred or difficult to understand
- Time to call 911
Additional symptoms of a stroke can include additional numbness throughout the body, especially if it's all located on one side or part of the body, confusion with speech and communication, difficulty seeing, dizziness or weakness when it comes to walking and coordination and a sudden or severe headache.
When a patient comes to the hospital with stroke symptoms, it's crucial to make a proper diagnosis quickly in order to begin treatment to minimize the effects of a stroke.
The stroke care team at Western Arizona Regional Medical Center delivers potentially life-saving care for ischemic strokes and hemorrhagic strokes, and can perform treatment options such as:
- Angioplasty and stent placement to open blocked blood vessels
- Embolizing agents (clotting medications) delivered by catheter to stop blood flow resulting from hemorrhagic strokes
- Thrombolitic therapy deliver blood clot-dissolving medicine to treat ischemic strokes
- Minimally invasive surgery to remove a blood clot, or repair arteries and veins
