Diabetes Education at Western Arizona Regional Medical Center

Diabetes affects more than 23 million Americans – nearly eight percent of the nation’s population – and is one of the country’s fastest growing health epidemics. More than one million adults are diagnosed with diabetes each year, and an estimated additional five million individuals with diabetes have not been formally diagnosed with the disease.

Diabetes Management Starts with You

Although diabetes is a chronic and incurable disease (with the exception of gestational diabetes), with proper medical care, clinical therapies, diet, hygiene and exercise, symptoms and complications can be successfully treated and managed.

Living with Diabetes

Western Arizona Regional Medical Center offers an education program designed to teach those with Type I, Type II or gestational diabetes the basic skills needed to manage diabetes, including developing a personal food plan and learning how to make informed health care decisions and improving your lifestyle.

To participate in the program, you will need to be referred by your physician. Once you have your referral, an individualized assessment with a diabetes educator (registered nurse or dietitian) will help you identify your personal health needs and goals.

After your assessment, you are registered to attend the diabetes self-management education classes, offered at Western Arizona Regional Medical Center.

This course will include topics such as:

• Diabetes Disease Process
• Nutritional Management
• Meal Planning
• Monitoring Blood Glucose
• Physical Activity
• Foot Care
• Acute Complications
• Medication or Insulin
• Chronic Complications
• Psychosocial Concerns
• Personal Goal Setting
